The JMJ Mission started in Ghana in the year 1983 beginning with our sister Ignatia Busch. The beginning of our JMJ presence in Ghana moved by the Spirit of Jesus in turn sent the disciples out to proclaim the kingdom of God. Moved by this same spirit, the JMJ sisters are now being sent to preach the good news through their apostolate.
In 1983 Sr. Ignatia Busch arrived in Ghana to be a doctor in Holy Family Hospital in Techiman. She longed to work in African country, via Memisa-Cordaid she came in contact with Holy Family Hospital run by the Medical Mission sisters in Techiman. At the same time they are greatly in need of a doctor, so Sr. Louise Van Laarhoven, the then Superior General agreed to send Sr. Ignatia to Techiman, where she was warmly welcomed by MMS community.
Sr. Ignatia Busch planted the seed of JMJ in the land of Africa-Ghana in the year 1983. In fact she became the first African Missionary in Ghana. The JMJ seed fell on the good soil and started to grow from then on. The arrival of Sr. Ignatia Busch to Ghana made possible to have many more contacts with the local Bishops, especially with the Bishop of Sunyani Diocese. In the year 1986, the then Superior General, Sr. Louise Van Laarhoven paid her first visit in Techiman Hospital. She was impressed by the organization of the health care system, the friendly people, by all these good works; she was thinking what could be done still to meet the needs of Ghanaian people. The Spirit of our Founder was moving and working in our sisters, it happened so in 1987, during the general chapter decided that possibilities should be explored for a new mission area in a developing country where our Indonesian and Indian sisters could start a new mission.
